Parts per million” (PPM) is a unit of measurement that describes the concentration of a particular substance in a larger quantity of a substance.
In the case of diesel fuel, PPM typically refers to the concentration of impurities or additives present in the fuel. For example, one part per million is equivalent to one unit of the substance measured for every one million units of the measured substance.
This unit is commonly used in industries where even very small concentrations of certain substances can have significant effects, such as fuel production and environmental regulations. In the context of diesel fuel quality, PPM is often used to express levels of impurities, such as sulfur content.
Sulfur is a natural element found in crude oil and can contribute to air pollution when burned in diesel engines.
Therefore, regulatory bodies often set limits on the maximum allowable sulfur content in diesel fuel to reduce the emission of sulfur dioxide (SO2), which is a harmful pollutant. For example, you may come across diesel fuel labeled as “low-sulfur diesel” with a sulfur content of, let’s say, 15 parts per million (15 PPM), indicating that for every one million units of diesel fuel, there are 15 units of sulfur present.
This value is significantly lower than the sulfur levels in conventional diesel fuels, which can vary from hundreds to thousands of parts per million.
Reducing sulfur content in diesel fuel has environmental benefits as it reduces the emission of sulfur dioxide and helps mitigate air pollution and associated health risks. It also contributes to the performance and longevity of modern diesel engines, as lower sulfur content can lead to less engine wear and improved emission control.
