Gasoline Exports
Hermes Refinery, a prominent entity in Iran’s oil and gas sector, has made significant contributions to the country’s gasoline exports. Here is a detailed article about Hermes Refinery’s role in gasoline exports from Iran:
Hermes Refinery: A Key Player in Gasoline Exports
Hermes Refinery, also known as Petro Refinery Novin Karan Hermes (PPNKH), is one of the largest producers of quality oil products in Iran. The refinery has a long history of exporting oil products globally, including gasoline, mazut, bitumen, solvents, and base oil.
Production and Export Capabilities
Hermes Refinery is equipped to produce and export a variety of petroleum derivatives, including gasoline, mazut, bitumen, solvents, and base oil (SN150 and SN500). The refinery’s production capabilities are extensive, covering both imports and exports of various types of crude oil, petroleum products, refinery chemicals, and petrochemical materials.
Historical Context
Prior to the development of the Persian Gulf Star refinery, Iran was heavily reliant on gasoline imports. In 2006, Iran was importing more than 27 million liters per day (ml/d) of gasoline, which was a significant drain on the country’s foreign currency reserves.
The commissioning of the Persian Gulf Star refinery in 2017 marked a turning point for Iran’s refining industry, making the country self-sufficient in gasoline production and even allowing it to export gasoline.
Modernization Efforts
Despite the significant strides made by the Persian Gulf Star refinery, Iran’s refining sector still faces challenges. The majority of its petroleum products are sourced from refineries established before the Islamic Revolution in 1979, which are now outdated and unprofitable. Only three refineries have been operationalized post-1979, with a combined capacity of less than 265,000 barrels per day.
Current Situation
Currently, Iran’s refining capacity stands at about 2.3 million barrels per day, with production capacities for gasoline and gasoil (both Euro-grade) respectively at 50 million liters per day and 100 million liters per day.
However, the country’s refining sector continues to struggle with the conversion of 30 percent of crude oil into highly polluting mazut and bitumen, which poses environmental hazards.
Role of Hermes Refinery
Hermes Refinery plays a crucial role in Iran’s gasoline exports. The refinery’s production and export capabilities have been instrumental in meeting domestic demand and contributing to the country’s export efforts.
Hermes Refinery’s focus on innovation, efficiency, and sustainability has helped it maintain a strong presence in the global oil and gas market.
